Shein shares slide after Hong Kong IPO

Shein raised about US$1.7 billion in its Hong Kong initial public offering, securing a public-market valuation of roughly US$26–26.5 billion. The listing places the fast-fashion retailer among the larger recent IPOs in the city by deal size, and marks a significant step in bringing the previously private company to public equity markets.

The shares began trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in an environment of close investor scrutiny. The IPO valuation is now the reference point for public-market expectations of Shein’s growth prospects and profitability, with trading in the first sessions offering an early indication of how that valuation is being received.

The stock’s first day of trading was marked by sharp price moves. Several reports said Shein’s shares fell around 9% during the debut session, while others described intraday losses of as much as 10% in early trading before the price recovered some ground later in the day.

Late in the initial session, stabilisation measures were reported to have been used to help support the share price after the steep declines. Such measures are typically available around new listings to reduce disorderly trading and can moderate extreme short-term swings immediately after an IPO.

Trading remained weak the day after the listing. On September 2, reports said Shein’s shares slipped more than 3% and were seen around HK$46.94 in early trade, extending the negative tone that followed the debut session.

The second-day decline added to the initial losses, reinforcing indications that some investors were reassessing the newly listed stock in the immediate aftermath of the offering. The moves left the shares below their level at the time of the IPO, highlighting ongoing selling pressure in the short term.

Coverage of the early trading sessions has underscored that Shein’s valuation and growth outlook are under close examination from public-market investors. The combination of a sizeable fundraising, an established but newly listed brand, and volatile early trading has concentrated attention on how the stock will perform once stabilisation support recedes.

The initial days of trading suggest that the company faces a testing post-IPO period as the market digests the new supply of shares and evaluates the business at its debut valuation. Price action in the coming sessions will further shape perceptions of the listing and of investor appetite for new issues in Hong Kong.
