Key Points

  • 01SK Hynix (SKHY) has decided not to pursue a US IPO for subsidiary Solidigm
  • 02The shelved listing had reportedly been planned for Nasdaq.
  • 03The move follows a recent review of options to boost Solidigm’s competitiveness
  • 04Solidigm is SK Hynix (SKHY)’s US-based NAND and SSD business built from Intel (INTC)’s memory unit

SK Hynix pulls planned US listing of Solidigm

South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix has decided not to proceed with a US initial public offering of its subsidiary Solidigm. South Korean media report that the group has cancelled plans to list the business on Nasdaq, with an official announcement expected. The decision comes after earlier indications that a US market flotation was under consideration for the unit.

Reports of the cancellation surfaced on Oct. 23 in Seoul, citing unnamed industry sources. SK Hynix did not have an immediate response to a request for comment.

Background on Solidigm and planned IPO

Solidigm is based in Rancho Cordova, California, and serves as SK Hynix’s US-based NAND flash memory and solid-state drive subsidiary. The business was assembled from SK Hynix’s acquisition of Intel (INTC)’s memory unit, creating a dedicated platform for NAND and enterprise solid-state drives. A US listing had been floated as a way to crystallise the unit’s value and to help fund SK Hynix’s broader capital expenditure plans related to artificial intelligence.

The previously envisaged Nasdaq flotation would have provided an additional funding channel linked directly to Solidigm’s operations and growth prospects. With the listing reportedly cancelled, that potential source of equity financing is no longer in play.

Implications for SK Hynix and Solidigm

The abandonment of the Solidigm IPO removes a planned step to separate part of SK Hynix’s NAND and enterprise SSD activities into a listed US vehicle. The decision narrows the immediate strategic options available for highlighting the standalone value of the Solidigm business in public markets. It also leaves Solidigm fully within SK Hynix’s existing corporate structure for now.

With Solidigm remaining unlisted, attention turns to the parent group’s approach to financing its investment plans and to Solidigm’s role within SK Hynix’s global memory portfolio. Market participants are likely to watch for any subsequent communication from SK Hynix outlining alternative measures to reinforce Solidigm’s competitiveness and to support capital spending in the storage segment.

Key Takeaways

  • 01SK Hynix (SKHY) has halted a planned Nasdaq listing of Solidigm, removing a potential equity funding route tied to its US memory and storage business.
  • 02Solidigm remains an internal SK Hynix unit focused on NAND and enterprise SSDs, rather than becoming a separately traded US-listed company.
  • 03Future disclosures from SK Hynix will be important for understanding how it plans to fund investments and support Solidigm’s competitiveness without an IPO.
