S&P 10-Day A/D Hits Geopolitical Extreme

The S&P 500 (SPX) currently shows a deeply depressed 10-day advance / decline line, matching oversold conditions last seen around the early stages of the Iran War. This indicator aggregates the number of advancing versus declining stocks and is commonly used to gauge overbought or oversold breadth across the index. Such readings reflect intense selling pressure and capitulation in market participation rather than weakness in a small group of names.

Historical episodes illustrate how similar breadth extremes have coincided with important turning points for the S&P 500 (SPX). During the post–Iraq War invasion selloff in 2003, severe breadth stress was followed by a tradable bottom within days and a multi-month rebound. In the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, an extreme washout in October–November preceded a strong 1-2 month rally, although fresh lows later appeared before the ultimate bottom.

The COVID-19 crash in March 2020 also featured a sharp breadth collapse as the S&P 500 (SPX) fell roughly 34% from its February peak to the intraday low, with the breadth extreme essentially aligning with a durable bottom and subsequent multi-month and multi-year recovery. These cases show that oversold breadth conditions have historically aligned with short-term exhaustion phases, but the durability of recoveries has depended on whether structural bear market forces were still unfolding.

If the current breadth extreme in the S&P 500 again aligns with an exhaustion phase, broad U.S. large-cap exposure would be the primary beneficiary. Vehicles such as SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), and the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) provide direct or equal-weighted access to any index-level recovery, with equal-weighted exposure often more sensitive to improvements in participation across constituents when breadth normalizes.

Terminology

  • 01Advance / decline line: Cumulative measure of advancing minus declining stocks, used to track market breadth.
  • 02Market breadth: Degree of participation across individual stocks in a market move.
