S&P 500 Earnings Surge Meets Slowing Revisions

S&P 500 (SPX) companies are currently posting exceptionally strong results, with blended year over year earnings growth near 29% and a third consecutive quarter above 25%. Beat rates on both earnings and revenue remain high, confirming that corporate performance is still surprising positively at the index level.

At the same time, forward earnings revision momentum for the S&P 500 (SPX) is starting to slow, indicating that analysts are becoming less aggressive in raising future profit estimates despite robust trailing numbers. This combination typically signals a late phase in the earnings cycle, when absolute results remain strong but expectations have largely caught up.

Historically, similar configurations of very strong trailing growth alongside decelerating revisions have preceded significant drawdowns in U.S. large cap equities, including episodes in 2007, 2018 and 2021 that led into the 2022 bear market. In each case, the inflection in revision momentum mattered more for prices than the level of reported earnings.

Mega cap constituents such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and NVIDIA (NVDA) are particularly exposed in this environment, as valuations in long duration growth and quality leaders are highly sensitive to changes in earnings expectations. Large financials like JPMorgan Chase (JPM) also sit at the center of index level dynamics, given their link to the credit cycle and overall financial conditions.

With the S&P 500 (SPX) at a point where trailing fundamentals are exceptionally strong but the pace of upgrades is cooling, index pricing is increasingly tied to whether earnings expectations can reaccelerate. If revision momentum continues to fade, historical patterns suggest that broad U.S. large cap equities may face a more challenging phase dominated by multiple compression rather than earnings growth acceleration.
