S&P 500 EPS Revisions Flip Historical Script

Q2 2026 is entering earnings season with S&P 500 (SPX) expectations moving in an unusually positive direction. Between March 31 and June 30, sell-side analysts raised aggregate Q2 EPS estimates by 3.4%, the largest pre-season increase in five years. This contrasts with the past 5-year pattern, where quarterly S&P 500 (SPX) EPS estimates were cut by about 2% on average in the three months before reporting.

Over a 20-year horizon, pre-earnings estimate reductions around 4% have been more typical as companies tend to guide conservatively and analysts adjust numbers lower into reporting. The current upside revision therefore represents a break from the long-running tendency for expectations to drift down between quarter-end and earnings. This shift matters most for vehicles directly tied to S&P 500 (SPX) earnings, such as SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), and Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO).

Historically, this downward revision pattern has been attributed to initial optimism in bottom-up estimates that is later tempered as more information from company updates and macro data is incorporated. In many prior quarters, the bulk of estimate changes clustered in the first several weeks after quarter-end, with a persistent negative bias. The Q2 2026 revision profile therefore signals an environment where analysts are incorporating relatively stronger earnings inputs ahead of results, creating a different backdrop from the usual pre-season markdowns for U.S. large-cap equities and S&P 500 constituent companies.

The atypical increase also interacts with segments that heavily influence index-level EPS, including mega-cap growth franchises that sit in both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100, and are represented in Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ). While the long-term pattern of estimates trending lower into earnings remains well documented, the current quarter stands out for turning that average decline into a moderate aggregate upgrade instead. Any subsequent performance of S&P 500 earnings and related ETFs will be interpreted against this higher starting bar for Q2 estimates.
