Key Points
Tesla marks record month for European sales
Tesla recorded a strong surge in European sales in September, with new-car registrations for its models jumping 72.5% year over year to 68,776 units across the European Union, the U.K., Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. These registrations, which reflect sales, marked a record monthly level for the company in the region and significantly outpaced the broader market’s growth.
Within the EU alone, Tesla’s September registrations climbed 78.6% to 45,866 vehicles. This performance gave the company a 4.7% share of the EU passenger-car market for the month and a 5.0% share across the EU, EFTA and the U.K., up from a smaller share a year earlier. Tesla also finished ahead of Chinese rival BYD (1211.HK) on a regional basis in September, as BYD (1211.HK) registered 49,953 vehicles across the wider European area.
Momentum builds over 2026
The September jump capped a strong year-to-date performance for Tesla in Europe. Across the EU, EFTA and the U.K., Tesla reached 260,575 registrations in the first nine months of the year, a 50% increase from 173,719 over the same period a year earlier.
Despite Tesla’s gains, competition remains intense. Over the first nine months, BYD logged 206,022 registrations in Europe, representing a 154.4% surge from the prior year.
Tesla’s model mix and segment dynamics
Tesla’s sales mix in Europe has been led by its core models. The Model Y topped the European market ranking with 40,971 sales in September, up 55% from a year earlier, while the Model 3 placed second. These results show that Tesla’s main nameplates continue to anchor its growth in the region’s battery-electric segment.
New-car registrations provide a window into how Tesla is tracking relative to the wider battery-electric vehicle market. Battery-electric vehicle sales across the EU reached 1.64 million units between January and August, a 45% increase compared with the same period of 2025. Over the first nine months of the year in Europe, 22.7% of all registrations were electric vehicles, indicating that EVs have become a significant portion of new car sales.
Broader European car market context
The overall European car market has also been expanding, though at a slower pace than Tesla’s growth. In September, monthly passenger-car registrations increased about 10% in Europe as a whole and 9.3% in the EU. Major markets contributed to this rise, with Germany up 9%, France up 12% and Italy up 9.8% in passenger-car registrations.
Within this broader market, the battery-electric segment has been growing quickly. Battery-electric vehicle registrations grew nearly 60% in Europe in September, outpacing the gains in hybrid-electric cars, which rose 5.3%, and plug-in-hybrid models, which increased 24%. This backdrop of strong EV growth, combined with Tesla’s outsized gains, highlights how the brand is leveraging the ongoing shift toward fully electric cars in Europe.
Key Takeaways
- 01Tesla significantly outperformed the broader European auto market in September, with registrations rising much faster than overall passenger-car growth.
- 02Strong gains for the Model Y and Model 3 underline Tesla’s reliance on a concentrated product lineup to drive its European expansion.
- 03Rapid growth in battery-electric registrations and rising EV market share provide a supportive backdrop for Tesla, even as rivals like BYD (1211.HK) expand quickly.
