TSMC boosts Arizona chip investment to $265bn

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM) is sharply increasing its planned investment in Arizona, committing an additional $100 billion to its U.S. buildout. The new pledge raises the company’s total planned Arizona investment pipeline to $265 billion. The move comes as the chipmaker seeks to capture what it describes as strong-structure, multi-year demand in its key markets.

The company’s chief financial officer said the fresh capital commitment is supported by robust customer demand in the United States and strong government backing. He emphasized that the firm does not intend to leave demand unserved by competitors, underscoring the strategic importance of expanding capacity in the U.S. market.

To meet surging customer requirements, TSMC is aggressively optimizing its leading-edge manufacturing capacity. The company is rapidly converting its 5-nanometer capacity to the more advanced 3-nanometer node to support customers’ needs. It expects its 2-nanometer technology to become a key revenue driver in the coming quarter, highlighting the speed of its technology transition.

In Arizona, phase one of the company’s expansion, using 4-nanometer technology, is already up and running. This operational milestone demonstrates that TSMC’s U.S. footprint is moving beyond construction into active production, even as further phases and technology upgrades are planned within the enlarged investment envelope.

The expanded Arizona commitment feeds into a broader increase in TSMC’s capital spending plans. The company has raised its full-year capital expenditure guidance to a range between $60 billion and $64 billion. This higher capex reflects both the scale of overseas projects and the need to support rapid advances in manufacturing technology.

At the same time, the CFO highlighted significant cost differentials between regions. He noted that fabrication plant construction costs in the United States are four to five times higher than in Taiwan. These elevated costs make capital allocation and efficiency critical as the company executes its large-scale U.S. program.

Beyond investment figures, TSMC is focusing on supply chain resilience as it expands abroad. The CFO said the company sees a manageable impact from conflicts in the Middle East. He credited diversified sourcing strategies and the use of safety stocks for limiting disruption risks.

The executive framed the Arizona expansion and broader capacity buildout as aligned with a long-term megatrend in the semiconductor industry. As long as this trend remains intact, he said, the company aims to continue delivering profitable growth to shareholders, balancing ambitious investment with cost and risk management.
