Stacked gold bullion bars in a vault as XAUUSD gains and TSX futures rise while oil prices slip

Key Points

  • 01TSX futures edge higher ahead of the Canadian market open
  • 02Gold prices (XAUUSD) advance, with spot gold (XAUUSD) up 0.3% to US$4,008.70
  • 03U.S. December gold (XAUUSD) futures gain 0.3% to US$4,021.90
  • 04Oil prices fall after nearing six‑month highs last week

TSX futures tick higher in early trade

Futures linked to Canada’s S&P/TSX index edged higher on Monday before the market open, pointing to a firmer start for blue‑chip Canadian equities. The move came as broader North American sentiment improved, with Wall Street futures also trading in positive territory after major markets in the region had finished lower on Friday.

The uptick in TSX futures was supported by strength in precious metals, particularly gold, which attracted buying interest. At the same time, a pullback in crude oil prices from recent highs helped temper some inflation concerns that had built up in recent sessions.

Gold advances as investors seek safety

Gold prices were higher in early dealings. Spot gold rose 0.3 per cent to US$4,008.70 an ounce, extending recent gains in the metal. U.S. gold futures for December delivery also added 0.3 per cent to trade at US$4,021.90.

The advance in gold provided support to resource‑heavy Canadian equities, where mining and materials stocks represent a significant portion of the benchmark index. Rising bullion prices can bolster earnings prospects and investor sentiment toward gold producers, offering a tailwind to the S&P/TSX index when the underlying commodity strengthens.

Oil pulls back from recent highs

Oil prices fell after having surged the previous week to levels near six‑month highs. The latest decline reflected hopes that hostilities between the United States and Iran may ease, reducing some of the risk premium that had been built into crude markets.

Even with the pullback, investors remained cautious as persistent attacks on key producer Saudi Arabia kept investors wary. Nonetheless, the retreat in crude prices helped cool some inflation worries, providing a more supportive backdrop for equities, including the Canadian market indicated by the rise in TSX futures.

Cross‑market backdrop for Canadian investors

With Wall Street futures in positive territory and commodities moving in different directions, Canadian investors faced a mixed but generally constructive setup at the start of the week. Higher gold prices and softer oil combined to shape expectations for sector performance on the TSX.

The combination of firmer precious metals and easing energy prices suggested potential rotation within the Canadian market between resource segments. As trading approached the opening bell, the overall indication remained one of modest optimism, with TSX futures pointing higher alongside supportive moves in key global asset classes.

Key Takeaways

  • 01TSX futures were supported by a combination of stronger gold prices and a pullback in oil, setting a constructive tone for Canadian equities.
  • 02Gold’s 0.3% rise in both spot and December futures terms underpinned sentiment toward resource‑linked sectors on the S&P/TSX index.
  • 03The decline in oil from near six‑month highs eased some inflation concerns, even as geopolitical risks around major producers remained in the background.
