UK energy price cap to rise 4% in October

Residential gas and electricity meters in a UK street as the energy price cap rises 4% in October

Key Points

  • 01Ofgem will raise the household energy price cap by 4% from 1 October 2026
  • 02Typical dual-fuel bills are projected to rise by about £60 a year to an annualised £1,723
  • 03A six‑month VAT removal on domestic electricity from October is set to save about £45 a year
  • 04Household energy debt is estimated at £6bn and may reach about £7bn by year-end

Ofgem confirms 4% rise in October price cap

Ofgem will increase the energy price cap for households by 4% with effect from 1 October 2026. The new cap level will apply for the three‑month period from 1 October to 31 December 2026. The adjustment is intended to reflect changes in underlying wholesale energy costs rather than set bills directly for each customer.

Under the revised cap, a typical dual‑fuel household paying by direct debit is expected to pay about £60 more a year than under the current level. If the October cap level were sustained for a full year, it would be equivalent to an annual average bill of £1,723 for such a household. The cap continues to set a limit on the unit price of gas and electricity and standing charges, not on total household spend.

Drivers of the cap increase

Ofgem linked the October cap rise to higher wholesale gas prices in international markets. It cited the impact of recent conflict in the Middle East as one factor pushing up global gas costs. These higher input costs are now feeding through into what suppliers are allowed to charge households under the regulated cap.

Regulators stressed that international gas prices remain a key determinant of UK energy costs. While the cap protects customers from paying more than a set level per unit, it is periodically updated so that suppliers can recover their costs when wholesale prices move.

Impact on households and government VAT support

The 4% increase means many households will see higher energy bills over the autumn quarter. However, the government plans to remove VAT from domestic electricity bills from October for six months. Ministers say this temporary measure will save a typical household about £45 a year, partially offsetting the cap‑related rise in overall energy costs.

More than a third of households, around 11 million, are on fixed‑price tariffs and therefore will not see their energy prices change as a direct result of the October cap adjustment. For customers on standard variable tariffs covered by the cap, the combined effect of the higher cap and VAT change will depend on individual usage patterns.

Rising energy debt and support for customers

Industry data estimate total household energy debt at around £6bn, with expectations it could rise to about £7bn by the end of the year. These figures point to continuing financial pressure on many customers even before the October cap rise takes effect.

Ofgem has advised anyone struggling to pay their energy bills to contact their supplier. The regulator has highlighted the availability of affordable repayment plans and other forms of support that suppliers can offer. It has also encouraged households to seek help early if they are at risk of falling into arrears.

Key Takeaways

  • 01The October 2026 cap increase reflects sustained wholesale gas pressures rather than a change in policy direction on price regulation itself.
  • 02Government VAT relief on electricity will only partly offset the higher cap, leaving many variable‑tariff households with a net rise in annual energy costs.
  • 03A significant minority of customers on fixed deals are insulated from the immediate impact, underscoring how tariff choices shape exposure to cap changes.
