Ukraine strikes Rosneft refinery in Saratov

Ukraine’s General Staff said that Ukrainian forces carried out an overnight strike between August 1 and 2, 2026, on Rosneft PJSC’s oil refinery in Russia’s Saratov region. The attack resulted in a fire at the facility, according to the General Staff’s statement.

The Saratov refinery is one of the Russian oil assets targeted in Ukraine’s campaign against fuel-producing infrastructure. Emergency services and authorities were reported to be dealing with the aftermath of the strike, but no final assessment of the scale of the damage has yet been made public.

In the same overnight operation, Ukrainian forces also struck the Engels airfield in the Saratov region. The airfield lies several hundred kilometres from Moscow and more than 1,000 kilometres from Kyiv, underlining the long-range nature of the attack.

The reported hit on Engels adds to a pattern of Ukrainian operations against military-related facilities deep inside Russian territory. As with the refinery, detailed information on damage and any impact on the airfield’s activity has not been disclosed.

Western coverage and Ukrainian statements describe the Saratov and Engels strikes as elements of a broader, sustained long-range drone campaign. This campaign targets fuel-producing infrastructure and other strategic sites inside Russia on a near-daily basis.

Recent reporting highlighted Ukrainian drone attacks on three oil refineries in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan, including facilities around Ufa that process millions of tonnes of oil each year. These refineries are located nearly 1,600 kilometres from Ukraine, illustrating the extended reach of Ukrainian unmanned systems.

The wider campaign has also included deep strikes on warehouses, ports and infrastructure sites in major Russian urban areas such as Moscow and St Petersburg. Together with the Saratov operation, these actions form a pattern aimed at disrupting fuel supplies and other logistical support within Russia.

While a fire at the Saratov refinery has been confirmed by Ukraine’s General Staff, the operational status of the plant following the strike is not yet clear. Officials have indicated that assessments are under way to determine the extent of the damage.

Any broader impact on Russian regional fuel markets or Rosneft’s output will depend on these ongoing evaluations.
