US diesel hits near‑record as oil jumps

Diesel fuel storage tanks at an industrial terminal as global diesel and crude oil prices surge

Key Points

  • 01US average diesel price rises to $5.78 per gallon, near a record
  • 02Brent (UKOIL) and WTI crude (USOIL) climb to about $97 and $92 a barrel
  • 03Strait of Hormuz shipping mostly stalled, straining fuel flows

Diesel prices surge toward record levels

U.S. diesel prices have climbed sharply, with the national average reaching $5.78 per gallon on Thursday. The increase of nine cents in a single day has brought pump prices within pennies of their highest level ever recorded. The latest move caps a fourth consecutive session of gains in global oil markets, underscoring mounting strain in fuel supply chains.

The current price level means diesel, a key fuel for freight, agriculture and industry, is now among the most expensive widely used fuels in the country. The jump has raised concerns about cost pressures for businesses that depend on diesel-intensive transport and logistics.

Crude benchmarks move higher

Alongside the rise in diesel, crude oil benchmarks have also advanced. Brent crude (UKOIL) traded at about $97 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (USOIL) hovered around $92 a barrel. These prices reflect continued gains over recent sessions as traders respond to mounting disruption in oil and refined-product flows.

The climb in crude prices adds an additional layer of pressure to downstream fuel markets. Higher feedstock costs typically translate into more expensive refined products such as diesel, especially when refining capacity is already tight.

Strait of Hormuz disruptions and supply strain

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for world oil flows, has been mostly at a standstill. While the U.S. Navy is helping some vessels navigate the narrow waterway, independent tracking data has raised doubts that normal flows have been restored. The limited movement of tankers is constraining both crude and refined-product shipments.

Analysts say that the escalation in the Middle East has reduced expectations that refined-product flows will recover quickly. They highlight global strain on refining capacity as another major factor lifting diesel costs, with limited spare capacity amplifying the impact of any disruption in supply routes.

White House response and policy signals

At a White House briefing, Vice President JD Vance declined to label the escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities a “war.” He stated that he could not provide a timeline for when fuel prices, including gasoline, might start to fall. He linked recent price increases to attacks on commercial shipping, emphasizing that Iran’s continued strikes on vessels have pushed energy prices higher.

Vance also said the administration would not resume talks with Iran while strikes on commercial shipping continue. He noted that the United States has been working to protect vessels transiting the region, but refrained from offering any forecast on how quickly market conditions or prices might ease.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Sharp increases in U.S. diesel prices are closely tied to both rising crude benchmarks and physical disruptions in key shipping routes.
  • 02Strain on global refining capacity is magnifying the price impact of Middle East tensions, leaving diesel markets particularly tight.
  • 03Policy uncertainty and ongoing security risks around the Strait of Hormuz are contributing to a fuel market environment where officials are unwilling to predict when prices will ease.
