U.S. lifts curbs on Anthropic’s top AI models

The U.S. Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Anthropic’s most advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, effective June 30, 2026. Anthropic said it received formal notice that restrictions on both systems were removed and described the decision as ending a period of limited access for its flagship technologies.

In its statement, the company said it will begin restoring access to the models the day after receiving the notice. This timeline indicates that users who were affected by the suspension can expect access to resume starting July 1, 2026, though Anthropic has not yet provided detailed rollout schedules or conditions for specific customer groups.

The Commerce Department had issued an export‑control directive on June 12 that required Anthropic to suspend access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for foreign nationals. In response, Anthropic disabled customer access to both models in order to comply with the directive, affecting availability beyond the United States.

The earlier action was tied to national security authorities cited in the directive. Reporting noted that the move followed concerns related to a reported jailbreak identified by a trusted partner, though current disclosures do not specify the technical details of that incident or the precise risks evaluated by regulators.

Before the June 30 announcement, the Commerce Department had already allowed a conditional, limited release of Mythos 5. Lutnick also said he had determined that appropriate safeguards were in place to allow access for certain trusted partners.
