Factory floor with idle machinery illustrating stalled US producer price inflation and PPI trends

Key Points

  • 01U.S. Producer Price Index for final demand was flat in July 2026
  • 02Final demand goods prices fell while services prices edged higher
  • 03Energy components such as diesel, gasoline and crude petroleum declined
  • 04Portfolio management fees and lumber prices registered notable increases

Headline producer prices stall in July

The Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand in the United States was unchanged in July 2026 on a seasonally adjusted basis, signaling flat wholesale prices for the month. This followed earlier gains in producer prices but marks a pause in month‑over‑month headline inflation at the producer level. The latest figure provides an updated snapshot of price pressures feeding into the broader economy from the production side.

On an unadjusted 12‑month basis, the final demand PPI increased 4.7% for the year ended in July 2026. This indicates that, despite the lack of monthly change in July, producer prices remain higher than a year earlier. The coexistence of flat monthly movement and a still‑elevated annual rate highlights the distinction between recent momentum and the longer‑term price level.

Goods prices fall while services edge higher

The overall stability in July’s final demand index masked differing trends between goods and services. Prices for final demand goods fell 0.7% in the month, exerting downward pressure on the headline index. In contrast, prices for final demand services rose 0.2%, providing a partial offset. This divergence underscores how changes in input and output markets are affecting different sectors of the economy.

Within intermediate demand categories, price movements also varied. The index for processed goods for intermediate demand declined 0.6%, and prices for unprocessed goods for intermediate demand fell 1.8%. By contrast, the index for services for intermediate demand rose 0.5%. These shifts suggest that upstream cost conditions for many producers eased for goods but firmed for services in July.

Energy and commodity moves drive goods declines

Energy‑related products played a key role in the downward movement of goods prices. Among processed goods, prices for diesel fuel fell 6.7%, leading the decline in that category. Jet fuel, basic organic chemicals, gasoline, thermoplastic resins and materials, and meats also registered price decreases. In the unprocessed goods segment, crude petroleum prices dropped 11.9%, further reinforcing the downward pressure from the energy complex.

Not all commodities moved lower, however. Lumber prices for processed goods increased 5.0% in July, standing out as a notable gain amid widespread declines in energy‑linked items. The mix of falling fuel costs and rising lumber prices illustrates how sector‑specific demand and supply dynamics are shaping the composition of producer inflation.

Services supported by portfolio management prices

The modest rise in services prices at the intermediate stage was heavily influenced by financial services. Prices for portfolio management services increased 6.5% in July, accounting for a large share of the advance in services for intermediate demand. This move helped lift overall services measures even as some other categories experienced more muted changes.

Taken together, July’s producer price data depict an environment where declines in goods and energy‑related categories are offset by firmer prices in certain services and selected commodities. The flat month‑over‑month reading alongside a 4.7% annual increase suggests that recent price pressure at the producer level has eased, but cumulative inflation over the past year remains significant.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Flat headline PPI in July reflects a balance between falling goods prices and rising services, rather than a broad-based price freeze.
  • 02Energy-driven declines in diesel, gasoline and crude petroleum were central to the pullback in goods prices and intermediate demand costs.
  • 03A sharp rise in portfolio management services shows that certain fee-based and financial components can meaningfully influence aggregate services inflation.
