Vodafone raises UK cost‑savings ambition
Vodafone Group (VOD.L) has increased the annual cost‑savings target for its combined UK operation, VodafoneThree, to £1.0 billion by fiscal year 2032. The upgraded ambition was presented to investors on 8 October 2026 as part of a broader update on the financial outlook for the merged UK business.
The enhanced target reflects management’s expectations for additional efficiencies as integration of Vodafone UK and Three UK progresses. The group framed the £1.0 billion goal as a structural improvement in the cost base rather than a short‑term programme.
Network integration at the core of savings plan
Vodafone stated that the extra savings will come primarily from further network rationalisation and integration work following the merger. A key element is a planned reduction in the number of mobile masts, from around 37,000 currently to about 26,000, as overlapping sites are phased out.
Rationalising infrastructure is intended to lower operating expenses such as site leasing, maintenance and energy costs while maintaining network coverage. The company indicated that these technical and infrastructure changes will be the main driver of the additional UK cost savings.
Despite the scale of the cost‑cutting target, Vodafone has said the upgraded UK savings plan is not expected to affect headcount. This positions the initiative as focused on network and systems efficiency rather than workforce reductions.
£11bn 5G investment supports growth targets
Alongside the cost programme, Vodafone is committing £11 billion over 10 years to build a next‑generation standalone 5G network for VodafoneThree. The investment is designed to modernise infrastructure and support new services while consolidation work is carried out on the existing network.
The group presented this 5G rollout as a foundation for its medium‑term financial ambitions in the UK. By investing in more efficient and advanced network technology, Vodafone aims to balance long‑term growth with the planned cost efficiencies.
Medium‑term financial goals for VodafoneThree
As part of the same investor briefing, Vodafone outlined medium‑term targets for VodafoneThree. Management is targeting mid‑to‑high single‑digit compound annual growth in adjusted EBITDAaL between fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2032.
In addition, Vodafone is aiming for operating free cash flow from the UK business to more than triple by fiscal 2032 compared with fiscal 2025. These goals combine the expected benefits of the £1.0 billion annual cost savings with the growth potential from the £11 billion standalone 5G investment programme.
Key Takeaways
- 01Vodafone is coupling a higher UK cost‑savings goal with a large 5G investment, signalling a dual focus on efficiency and network modernisation.
- 02The savings are intended to come mainly from network and infrastructure consolidation, not reductions in workforce headcount.
- 03Medium‑term targets for EBITDAaL growth and a more than threefold increase in operating free cash flow highlight VodafoneThree’s central role in the group’s UK strategy.
