VW approves sweeping Future Plan overhaul

Volkswagen’s (VOW3d) supervisory board has unanimously approved a wide ranging transformation programme presented by the management board and referred to internally as the “Future Plan.” The initiative is intended to reshape the group’s operations and restore competitiveness in a changing automotive market. It represents a group level effort, covering multiple brands and regions, and marks a significant step in Volkswagen’s (VOW3d) ongoing turnaround efforts.

As part of the plan, management has set a clear profitability objective. Volkswagen (VOW3d) is targeting an operating return on sales of about 9% by 2030. This compares with an operating margin of 3.8% reported for the first half of 2026, underscoring the scale of improvement the group is aiming to deliver over the remainder of the decade.

A central element of the Future Plan is a substantial reduction in headcount. The package could include cutting around 50,000 jobs across the Volkswagen Group, including management positions. The company has stated that it has not provided details on when these reductions might occur or how they would be allocated across specific brands and regions.

The absence of a defined timetable or breakdown leaves the potential impact unevenly distributed across the group for now. Management has indicated that strategic decisions affecting individual brands and plants will be communicated at a later stage, suggesting that further announcements on implementation details are still to come.

Reports on the Future Plan highlight heightened uncertainty for parts of Volkswagen’s industrial footprint in Germany. Multiple accounts say the programme puts the future of four plants in Emden, Zwickau, Hannover and Neckarsulm in doubt. These facilities are referenced as locations where long term production planning may be reassessed under the new strategy.

Additional reporting based on a leaked internal document indicates that the plan envisages phasing out the SEAT brand by the end of 2029, with viable products and production capacity to be transferred where appropriate, including to Cupra. Volkswagen has said that no final details on brand specific measures have been released and that such strategic decisions will be disclosed at the appropriate time.

Taken together, the Future Plan outlines Volkswagen’s strategic direction through 2030, combining ambitious profitability targets with deep structural changes. The focus on lifting the operating margin to about 9% signals a strong emphasis on efficiency, cost control and portfolio optimisation across the group.
