Automotive factory assembly line reflects restructuring pressure on major European automaker shares

  • 01Porsche SE (PAH3d) calls Volkswagen (VOW3d) a group at a “historic crossroads”
  • 02Controlling shareholder urges swift restructuring and full consideration of options
  • 03Volkswagen (VOW3d) is weighing job cuts of up to 100,000 amid profit pressures
  • 04Labour and Lower Saxony push back as Porsche SE (PAH3d) posts lower H1 earnings

Controlling families press for rapid decisions

Volkswagen’s (VOW3d) restructuring plans have come under sharper focus after Porsche SE (PAH3d), the holding company of the automaker’s controlling families, delivered its strongest public message yet on the need for swift action. Chairman Hans Dieter Pötsch said the Volkswagen Group is at a “historic crossroads” and warned that the longer decisions are delayed, the bigger the problems will become.

Pötsch called on all stakeholders to step up and take responsibility for ensuring the company’s sustainable competitiveness. His remarks underline growing urgency around management’s overhaul agenda as the group contends with weaker profits, tariff-related costs and intensified competition from Chinese brands.

Porsche SE backs VW management’s proposals

Johannes Lattwein, the Porsche SE board member responsible for finance and IT, stated that Porsche SE supports Volkswagen management and its proposals. He framed competitiveness as the central goal and said every option must be considered in pursuing it.

The stance signals alignment between the controlling families and Volkswagen’s executive leadership under CEO Oliver Blume, who has pledged to drastically overhaul the group. A Volkswagen spokesperson said the statements from Porsche SE confirm the group’s position on all aspects of the presented future plan and the urgency of its implementation.

Scale of potential job cuts and cost measures

As part of its response to a profit slump and external cost pressures, Volkswagen has confirmed it is examining cuts of up to 100,000 jobs worldwide. The group is also looking at measures to reduce its cost structure, raise productivity and improve plant capacity utilisation.

On the company’s second-quarter and half-year results call, CEO Oliver Blume said Volkswagen already has a clear strategy and is implementing measures from its future plan. Earlier comments from CFO Arno Antlitz in late July referred to “various options” under consideration to strengthen efficiency and profitability, without detailing specific steps.

Labour and regional stakeholders push back

Labour representatives and the German state of Lower Saxony remain central to the restructuring debate. Lower Saxony holds a 20% blocking minority on Volkswagen’s supervisory board, giving it significant influence over major strategic decisions.

Sources report that the labour side and Lower Saxony voted against Blume’s plan at the last supervisory board meeting in July. Trade unions, including IG Metall, have said they will defend workers and oppose plant closures, setting the stage for difficult negotiations over any large-scale job reductions or factory changes.

Porsche SE earnings under pressure

Against this backdrop, Porsche SE reported adjusted half-year earnings after tax of €949 million, a decline of 14.5% compared with a year earlier. The results highlight that the holding company is also feeling financial pressure as the value and performance of its major investments come under scrutiny.

The combination of lower earnings at the controlling shareholder and operational headwinds at Volkswagen adds weight to the calls from Porsche SE for timely, decisive restructuring. The outcome of ongoing discussions among management, labour and public stakeholders will shape how far and how fast Volkswagen’s overhaul proceeds.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Volkswagen’s controlling shareholder is openly pushing for decisive restructuring, reinforcing management’s message that delays could worsen the group’s challenges.
  • 02The prospect of up to 100,000 job cuts and broad efficiency measures signals a potentially far-reaching overhaul of Volkswagen’s operations.
  • 03Resistance from labour and the state of Lower Saxony means any restructuring will need to balance cost reductions with political and social constraints.
  • 04Porsche SE’s 14.5% earnings decline adds financial urgency to the situation, aligning investor pressure with management’s drive for competitiveness.
