Zealand, Generate sign AI protein drug deal

Zealand Pharma and Generate Biomedicines have entered a collaboration and license agreement to develop protein therapeutics engineered with artificial intelligence for obesity and other metabolic diseases. The partnership, announced on October 13, 2026, brings together an AI‑based protein design platform with a company focused on advancing and commercializing therapies in metabolic indications.

The alliance centers on using generative AI to design novel protein drug candidates aimed at key metabolic pathways. By focusing on obesity and related metabolic disorders, the companies are addressing disease areas with substantial unmet medical need while concentrating on modalities that can be tailored by computational design.

Under the agreement, Generate Biomedicines will lead discovery and early research activities through selection of lead candidates. This stage will leverage Generate’s generative AI platform to engineer protein therapeutics that meet predefined pharmacologic and developability criteria.

Once lead candidates are selected, Zealand Pharma will assume responsibility for clinical development, including the design and execution of human studies. Zealand will also manage regulatory submissions in relevant jurisdictions and oversee worldwide commercialization of any approved products emerging from the collaboration.

The deal provides Generate with an upfront payment of $30 million. In addition, Generate is eligible for up to $35 million in early preclinical milestone payments tied to the progress of the initial programs before they enter later‑stage development.

Beyond the early research phase, the agreement includes nearly $1.2 billion in potential development, regulatory and commercial milestone payments to Generate. These milestones are structured around the advancement and market performance of the collaboration’s product candidates, offering substantial long‑term upside if the programs are successful.

The collaboration initially covers two programs, each focused on AI‑engineered protein therapeutics in metabolic disease. For these programs, the agreement provides for tiered royalties to Generate on future product sales, aligning the company’s long‑term incentives with the commercial success of any approved therapies.

The structure also includes an option to add a third program under the same collaboration framework. This option gives the partners flexibility to expand the scope of their work if early results are encouraging, while maintaining the same division of responsibilities and financial terms adapted to an additional asset.
