The current US bull market is being driven by AI-related stocks, with large-cap technology leaders already delivering outsized gains. Profit-taking pressures are rising as some investors question how long this leadership can persist after such rapid appreciation.

Historically, leadership in structurally driven bull markets has tended to persist far beyond the point at which winners are widely recognized. During the 1990s technology cycle, companies such as Microsoft (MSFT) and peers continued compounding for 5-7 years after their dominance became obvious.

A similar pattern appeared in the post‑GFC cycle, when mega-cap platforms like Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), Netflix (NFLX), and Microsoft (MSFT) extended their outperformance for roughly 6-8 years after FAANG leadership was established. Semiconductor leaders, including NVIDIA (NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Broadcom (AVGO), and Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), showed comparable multi-year strength from 2016 to 2021.

In the current AI-led phase, core infrastructure and platform names such as NVIDIA (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) sit at the center of the AI spending cycle. These companies combine strong profitability with direct exposure to AI training, inference, and cloud demand, aligning closely with the characteristics of past bull-market leaders that maintained strength over 1-3 year horizons.

Historical precedents indicate that bull-market leadership typically weakens only when the underlying secular driver fades or macro conditions turn sharply restrictive. With AI capex and earnings still acting as key supports, the current pattern suggests that major AI beneficiaries can remain central to index performance even after substantial prior gains, as long as structural demand for AI infrastructure and applications persists.
