Bolsonaro Lead Revives Brazil Runoff Pattern

Flávio Bolsonaro has emerged from Brazil’s first presidential round with 47% of the vote versus Lula’s 45%, sending the race to an October 25 runoff. Under Brazil’s post‑1988 two‑round system, every presidential contest that went to a runoff has ultimately been won by the first‑round leader. In six of those seven elections, however, the margin tightened in the second round, underscoring that this pattern is historical rather than a guarantee.

For Brazilian risk assets, the main linkage historically has been how investors interpret the frontrunner’s policy stance rather than the electoral pattern alone. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) serves as a primary, liquid US‑listed vehicle for broad Brazilian equity exposure and has previously reflected shifts in perceived reform momentum, including during the 2002 and 2018 cycles. Large private banks such as Banco Bradesco (BBD) and Itaú Unibanco (ITUB), and state‑controlled Petrobras (PBR), have all been sensitive to expectations around macro policy, governance and privatisation.

Historical episodes illustrate that a first‑round leader winning the presidency does not mechanically translate into positive equity performance. In 2002, market stress ahead of the vote was followed by a relief rally and outperformance once policy moderation became clearer under Lula. By contrast, in 2014, Dilma Rousseff’s lead and eventual victory coincided with a negative equity reaction around the runoff and subsequent relative underperformance as recession and policy uncertainty deepened. The 2026 setup therefore centers on how investors judge the prospective policy mix, not solely on the statistical precedent that first‑round leaders have always taken the Planalto so far.
