Electricity transmission towers over a hot city as Europe heatwave strains power grids and boosts AC demand

Key Points

  • 01Record heatwave brings 40°C-plus temperatures to parts of France
  • 02UK issues Electricity Margin Notice amid tight evening power margins
  • 03Soaring cooling demand is testing electricity systems across Europe
  • 04Air‑conditioner orders from Europe surge for Asian manufacturers

Record-breaking temperatures across Europe

Large parts of Europe are experiencing a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures climbing sharply in several countries on 25–26 June 2026. In France, daytime temperatures have exceeded 40°C in many places, and more than 44 million people have been placed under the highest red heat alert. In the UK, a provisional June record of 36.4°C was logged at Yeovilton in Somerset. Authorities have highlighted that these conditions present significant risks to health and infrastructure.

Health and emergency services have faced intense pressure as the heat has persisted. In London, ambulance crews responded to 642 Category 1 calls on one day, the highest ever number of life‑threatening emergencies recorded by the service. In Spain, a national monitoring agency estimated that more than two hundred deaths since Sunday could be attributed to the heat. Officials have also warned about dangerous nighttime temperatures and the risk of ongoing strain on hospitals and emergency response systems.

Electricity systems under heat stress

The surge in temperatures has driven up electricity demand for cooling and added strain to European power networks. Britain’s energy system operator issued an Electricity Margin Notice for Friday evening, asking generators and suppliers to make additional capacity available. The operator said forecasts showed tight margins on the electricity system during the evening peak, with the situation linked to extremely high temperatures across Great Britain and continental Europe.

High temperatures are also affecting electricity supply in parts of Europe. France’s main energy provider temporarily shut down two nuclear reactors, including units at Nogent‑sur‑Seine and Bugey, to avoid discharging excessively warm cooling water into rivers. Infrastructure and transport systems have faced stress as well, with authorities warning of potential disruption as the heatwave continues. These factors combine to make balancing supply and demand on power grids more challenging during peak hours.

Surging demand for cooling equipment

The same heat that is straining grids is also reshaping consumer behaviour, particularly in the cooling market. Air‑conditioner makers in Asia, including major brands such as Samsung, Midea and Mitsubishi Electric, have reported a surge in orders from Europe. Sales data show strong momentum: German e‑commerce sales of air conditioners in May were significantly higher than a year earlier, and shipments to Spain and France also registered sharp year‑on‑year increases.

Industry data indicate that air‑conditioner penetration in European homes remains relatively low, while the current heatwave is pushing more households and businesses to install cooling equipment. Manufacturers expect demand to stay firm through the peak cooling season as temperatures remain elevated. This shift is occurring alongside broader concerns about the resilience of energy systems, highlighting the link between extreme weather, electricity demand and appliance markets.

Key Takeaways

  • 01The heatwave is simultaneously increasing electricity demand and constraining parts of power supply, creating tighter evening margins on European grids.
  • 02Health, emergency and transport systems are facing notable stress, underscoring how extreme temperatures can quickly become a multi‑sector challenge.
  • 03Rapid growth in European air‑conditioner purchases is benefiting major Asian manufacturers and may have lasting effects on regional energy consumption patterns.
