Ford recalls 565,691 Broncos over fire risk

Ford Motor Co. (F) has initiated a safety recall covering 565,691 Ford (F) Bronco and Bronco Raptor sport-utility vehicles in the United States. The action applies to certain model years from 2021 through 2026 and focuses specifically on these Bronco variants. The recall centers on a potential defect in the engine compartment that can increase the risk of fire.

The affected vehicles share a similar engine-bay layout and wiring design, prompting a broad recall population. By targeting a large number of Broncos and Bronco Raptors, Ford aims to capture all vehicles that may contain the problematic wiring-harness condition.

Engineers identified that the primary wiring harness located in the engine compartment can experience premature wear or physical damage. If the wiring insulation becomes compromised and the conductors are exposed, the harness may short-circuit. Such a short can generate heat or sparks inside the engine bay, raising the risk that surrounding materials could ignite.

Materials potentially exposed to heat or sparks include grease, plastics and fuel vapors that may be present in a tightly packaged engine compartment. While the recall describes an increased risk of an engine-compartment fire, Ford states it is not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to the issue at this time.

Ford estimates that roughly 1% of the 565,691 recalled vehicles actually have the wiring-harness defect. Nonetheless, the company is recalling the entire group of potentially affected Broncos and Bronco Raptors to ensure that any at-risk wiring is identified and protected.

As a remedy, Ford will have dealers inspect the engine-bay wiring harness in the recalled vehicles. Technicians will look for signs of wear, chafing or damage that could expose wiring and create a short. Where necessary, they will apply a heavy-duty protective sheathing or cover over vulnerable sections of the harness.

This inspection and installation of protective components will be carried out at no cost to vehicle owners. The repair approach is intended both to correct existing damage and to prevent premature wear in the future by shielding the wiring from further abrasion.

Owners of potentially affected Ford Bronco and Bronco Raptor models can use their vehicle identification number to confirm recall eligibility on official recall portals. They may also contact Ford or authorized dealers for instructions on scheduling inspections and repairs as parts and service slots become available.

The recall adds a large population of Bronco and Bronco Raptor vehicles to Ford’s current safety and quality actions. Addressing more than half a million SUVs will involve significant dealer service activity and repair coordination across the U.S. market.
