High bandwidth memory and server DRAM are now in a pronounced supercycle, with bit demand expanding sharply and supply expected to remain tight through 2028. Customers are pre committing capacity out to 2031, locking in multi year visibility for leading suppliers as blended HBM average selling prices rise into the late 2020s.
Micron Technology (MU) has already secured supply agreements covering more than 35% of its revenue, providing unusual line of sight on pricing and volumes. That revenue base is heavily leveraged to DRAM and HBM, so tighter utilization and structurally higher ASPs feed directly into margins and earnings.
Across the memory complex, the setup mirrors past structural undersupply periods in DRAM, when disciplined capacity and strong secular demand produced multi year gains in revenues and profitability. Prior supercycles around PCs in the mid 1990s, dot com servers in 1999 2000, and smartphones in 2010 2014 all saw Micron (MU) and Korean peers post several fold share price advances before the cycle eventually turned.
SK Hynix (SKHY) and Samsung Electronics, as two of the other global DRAM and HBM leaders, sit on similarly high operating leverage to AI server demand and HBM pricing. Western Digital (WDC) participates more indirectly via NAND and SSD demand for AI storage, where pricing power has historically been weaker than DRAM but can still improve when industry capex remains constrained.
With HBM bit demand and non HBM server DRAM demand both growing strongly, the current environment combines constrained supply, rising content per server, and multi year customer pre commitments. That combination has historically been the condition under which memory manufacturers captured sustained pricing power and expanded margins until fresh capacity or demand shocks eventually reset the cycle.
Terminology
- 01High bandwidth memory: Advanced stacked DRAM used in AI accelerators, offering very high bandwidth per package.
- 02Bit demand: Total volume of memory capacity sold, measured in data bits, not units.
- 03Average selling prices: Realized prices per unit a company receives across its product mix.
- 04Supercycle: Extended multi-year period of above-normal demand, tight supply, and strong pricing.
