LNG storage tanks at a Gulf export terminal as regional tensions threaten gas project timelines

Key Points

  • 01QatarEnergy warns Strait of Hormuz crisis is disrupting equipment deliveries
  • 02Saad al-Kaabi says LNG output is currently only a “very minute” volume
  • 03Startup of some North Field East LNG trains is targeted for 2027
  • 04North Field South LNG expansion is scheduled to begin production in 2028

Hormuz crisis disrupts QatarEnergy’s expansion

QatarEnergy is facing risks to its liquefied natural gas expansion programme as the crisis over the Strait of Hormuz disrupts logistics to Qatar. CEO Saad al-Kaabi said critical equipment needed for projects is currently unable to reach the country because of the situation in the key maritime corridor. He warned that these constraints could delay some of the company’s planned expansion projects if they continue.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for energy shipments, and the current crisis has created bottlenecks that are directly affecting QatarEnergy’s ability to receive essential project components. Kaabi’s comments underline that the impact is not limited to shipping schedules but extends to the overall timing of major development phases in the company’s LNG programme.

Current LNG production at very low levels

Amid the ongoing disruption, Kaabi said QatarEnergy is producing only a “very minute” volume of liquefied natural gas. This description highlights how constrained current operations are while the company contends with restricted access to necessary equipment and materials.

The remark on output levels comes as QatarEnergy is in the middle of a significant growth phase for its LNG capacity. The limited production underscores the immediate operational pressures the company is managing alongside its longer-term expansion plans.

North Field East and South timeline risks

Kaabi reaffirmed that a few liquefaction trains under the North Field East expansion are due to start up in 2027. He also stated that the North Field South expansion is scheduled to begin production in 2028. These projects form central pillars of QatarEnergy’s strategy to expand LNG output over the coming years.

However, Kaabi indicated that the transport and delivery constraints created by the Strait of Hormuz crisis could push back these planned timelines if the situation persists. Any delay in receiving critical equipment could slow construction, commissioning, or startup activities at the new trains.

The possibility of schedule slippage for North Field East and North Field South adds a longer-term dimension to the challenges currently faced. While QatarEnergy still cites 2027 and 2028 as the target dates, the company is explicitly linking those milestones to the resolution of the logistical issues affecting the Strait of Hormuz.

Key Takeaways

  • 01QatarEnergy’s LNG growth plans are now directly exposed to geopolitical and logistical risks in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • 02Current LNG production described as a “very minute” volume suggests near-term operational constraints alongside project risks.
  • 03Targeted 2027 and 2028 start dates for key North Field expansions remain in place but are now conditional on easing transport disruptions.
