Netflix secures 2030 World Cup rights in Spain and Andorra

Netflix (NFLX) has obtained exclusive broadcasting rights in Spain and Andorra for the men’s FIFA World Cup 2030. The agreement grants the platform coverage of all 104 matches of the tournament, which will be streamed live in both territories. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

The arrangement marks a significant move into top-tier football for Netflix in the Spanish market. The company plans to surround live coverage with a suite of original programming aimed at local audiences.

Comprehensive live and studio coverage

Netflix will complement live match streams with pre-match, halftime and post-match programming. It also plans daily round-up shows focused on the tournament’s key moments, designed specifically for viewers in Spain.

These shows will aim to keep fans engaged throughout the competition days, offering highlights and analysis around the full schedule of 104 fixtures.

Free-to-view access and sublicensing plan

As part of the agreement, Netflix will make one match per matchday available free to watch in Spain. This opens a window for non-subscribers to access selected live games during the tournament.

In addition, Netflix will sublicense a package of matches to a national free-to-air broadcaster in Spain. That package will include every match involving the Spanish national team, along with both semi-finals and the final.

The identity of the free-to-air partner has not yet been announced. Netflix has indicated that further details on this sublicensing arrangement will be provided closer to the start of the tournament.

A centenary World Cup with multi-country hosting

The 2030 men’s World Cup will be the centenary edition of the tournament. It will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, reflecting a multi-country format for the main competition.

In addition to matches in those host nations, celebratory fixtures will take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Tournament organizers have described this staging as a special edition marking 100 years since the first World Cup.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Netflix’s exclusive rights in Spain and Andorra position its platform as the central destination for the 2030 World Cup in those markets.
  • 02The combination of full live coverage and tailored studio programming signals a broad content strategy around a single major sports event.
  • 03Free-to-view matches and a sublicensed package to a national broadcaster ensure that key games, including Spain’s fixtures and the final stages, remain widely accessible.
  • 04The centenary, multi-country format of the 2030 World Cup adds significance to Netflix’s rights deal in one of the tournament’s host nations.
