Key Points

  • 01NHTSA has closed a 2022 probe into unexpected deceleration in Tesla (TSLA) cars
  • 02The evaluation covered about 695,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles
  • 03Regulators cited low demonstrated hazard and fewer reported incidents
  • 04Investigators found no related crashes or collision‑inducing conditions

NHTSA ends Tesla unexpected braking review

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed a preliminary evaluation into unexpected deceleration events in Tesla (TSLA) vehicles that was opened in 2022. The action, announced in a notice dated July 2, 2026, ends a multi‑year review focused on braking behavior in certain Tesla (TSLA) models.

The evaluation covered approximately 695,000 vehicles, specifically Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars. These vehicles were reviewed after reports of sudden or unexpected deceleration, sometimes described as instances of unexpected braking.

Scope and focus of the 2022 evaluation

The preliminary evaluation was opened to examine whether certain Tesla vehicles were exhibiting braking responses that could pose a safety concern. Investigators considered how the deceleration events affected vehicle control, including position within the driving lane and spacing to following vehicles.

NHTSA’s notice states that the reported conditions did not alter the vehicles’ lateral positioning in their lanes. It also concludes that the events did not cause a significant loss in distance between the affected vehicle and vehicles traveling behind it that would lead to a collision.

Findings on hazard level and incident trends

In closing the probe, NHTSA cited a low demonstrated hazard to drivers as a central finding of the evaluation. The agency also reported a substantial drop in the number of incidents being reported over the course of the review.

These observations contributed to the decision that further investigative steps were not warranted at this time. The conclusion reflects the regulator’s assessment of the real‑world safety impact of the reported deceleration behavior in the covered vehicles.

Crash analysis and regulatory outcome

As part of the evaluation, NHTSA reviewed whether the reported unexpected deceleration had resulted in crashes. The agency stated that it identified no crashes linked to the events under investigation.

With the July 2, 2026 notice, the preliminary evaluation is formally closed. The action removes an active federal safety review over the specified population of about 695,000 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles related to unexpected braking incidents.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Regulators concluded that unexpected deceleration in the reviewed Tesla vehicles did not present a high safety risk under the conditions studied.
  • 02The absence of identified crashes and a decline in reported incidents were decisive factors in ending the multi‑year evaluation.
  • 03Closure of the preliminary probe eases a regulatory overhang for the affected Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles tied to braking behavior concerns.
