Energy storage tanks under cloudy sky illustrating rising wholesale inflation and PPI surge in the U.S. market

Key Points

  • 01U.S. Producer Price Index for final demand rose 1.3% in September 2026
  • 02PPI was up 6.3% over the 12 months ended in September
  • 03Final demand goods prices climbed 2.6%, services increased 0.8%
  • 04Energy drove the move, with gasoline prices jumping 20.3%

Wholesale prices record sharp September jump

U.S. wholesale prices accelerated markedly in September 2026, as the Producer Price Index for final demand increased 1.3 percent from August on a seasonally adjusted basis. This monthly rise was the strongest since March 2022 and came in above economist expectations for a more moderate gain. On an unadjusted basis, final demand prices were 6.3 percent higher than a year earlier, the largest 12‑month increase since December 2022.

The latest data highlight a renewed pickup in inflation pressures at the producer level after smaller monthly advances in July and August. The September performance pushed wholesale inflation to its highest level in more than four years, underscoring a broad‑based upturn across goods and services categories.

Goods prices surge on energy and gasoline

Prices for final demand goods rose 2.6 percent in September, reflecting widespread increases across key components. Over 80 percent of this broad‑based advance was attributable to final demand energy, which jumped 10.8 percent on the month. Energy’s outsized move made it the central driver of the overall increase in goods prices.

Gasoline was a particularly important factor, with prices up 20.3 percent in September. Roughly half of the total increase in the index for final demand goods can be traced to gasoline alone. Other energy‑related and commodity categories, including diesel fuel, jet fuel, residential electric power, fresh and dry vegetables, and crude petroleum, also posted price gains, adding to upward pressure on the goods side.

Services prices also move higher

Final demand services prices advanced 0.8 percent in September, contributing alongside goods to the overall rise in producer inflation. Nearly half of the increase in services was linked to higher margins for final demand trade services, which were up 1.4 percent. This category reflects the difference between selling prices and wholesale or acquisition costs for retailers and wholesalers.

Additional support came from transportation and warehousing services, where the index rose 3.4 percent, and from final demand services excluding trade, transportation, and warehousing, which increased 0.3 percent. These gains indicate that cost pressures extended beyond goods and energy into a range of service activities.

Underlying producer inflation broadens

Measures that strip out more volatile components also pointed to firm underlying inflation. The index for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services increased 0.5 percent in September after a smaller rise in August. Over the 12 months ended in September, this measure was up 5.0 percent.

The combination of strong headline and core‑type PPI readings shows that inflation pressures were not confined solely to swings in energy prices. Instead, they were evident across a wide set of goods and services, suggesting a broad‑based rise in producer‑level costs at the end of the third quarter of 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • 01September 2026 marked a clear acceleration in producer inflation, with both monthly and annual PPI measures reaching multi‑year highs.
  • 02Energy, and gasoline in particular, played a decisive role in lifting goods prices, but services and core components also moved higher.
  • 03The 5.0% annual increase in PPI excluding foods, energy, and trade services points to broad underlying cost pressures beyond volatile categories.
