Volvo Cars names Klaus Zellmer as next CEO

Volvo Cars has appointed Klaus Zellmer as its next President and Chief Executive Officer, marking a planned change at the top of the automaker. The company said Zellmer will assume the role no later than 1 October 2027, providing a clear timeframe for the leadership transition. Zellmer currently leads Škoda Auto, giving him experience at the helm of a major automotive brand. In comments released with the appointment, he said he was pleased to be joining Volvo Cars at what he described as an important moment in the company’s development. The announcement positions his arrival as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen performance and execution at the automaker.

Klaus Zellmer will succeed Håkan Samuelsson, the current CEO of Volvo Cars. Samuelsson returned to the top role in 2025 and has been leading the company through its recent phase of strategic work. His current contract runs until April, after which he does not intend to work full time.

Volvo Cars stated that Samuelsson will support a smooth transition to his successor. The board has planned the handover to occur within about a year of the announcement, allowing time for an orderly shift in responsibilities. This timeline is intended to maintain continuity in leadership as the company prepares for Zellmer’s arrival.

Eric Li, Chairman of Volvo Cars, highlighted Zellmer’s mix of experience as a key reason for the appointment. He described Zellmer as combining “deep automotive expertise” with “broad international leadership experience,” qualities the board views as important for guiding the company. These attributes are presented as aligned with Volvo’s ambitions for its next phase of development.
