WestJet cuts flights ahead of strike deadline

As part of the network reduction, reports on August 1 highlighted that WestJet was progressively grounding planes to align its schedule with the looming deadline. WestJet said that passengers with travel booked between July 30 and August 4 could make a one-time change or cancellation without fees. The policy was designed to give affected travellers flexibility to adjust plans in light of the uncertainty around the strike deadline. The airline stated that customers whose flights are cancelled would be refunded or re-accommodated, as applicable.

At the same time, WestJet emphasized that some parts of its operation would continue even if the dispute affects mainline flying. The company said that regional flights operated by WestJet Encore, as well as codeshare services flown by partner airlines, would not be affected by the potential strike. This distinction means that the impact is concentrated on WestJet’s own mainline network rather than across all services.

The combination of flight cancellations, aircraft parking, and flexible customer policies underscores the airline’s effort to manage an orderly reduction in capacity ahead of the August 2 strike timeline.
