Semiconductor Rout Deepens, Pressuring CoreWeave

Semiconductor wafers in a chip fab as a sector rout pressures chip stocks and credit markets

Key Points

  • 01Semiconductor stocks drop broadly, dragging on major U.S. indexes
  • 02About two-thirds of SOX members fall more than 10% in the rout
  • 03CoreWeave (CRWV) faces surging bond yields and record CDS pricing
  • 04Nasdaq 100 (NDX) logs its worst recent week as chip slump spreads

Broad semiconductor selloff hits SOX components

Semiconductor shares have entered a sharp downturn, with components of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) posting widespread declines. Around 20 of the 30 stocks in the index have lost more than 10% in value since the current rout began, underscoring the breadth of the move. The losses extend across the sector rather than being confined to a handful of names, pointing to a broad reset in chip valuations.

Within the index, Coherent Corp. stands out as one of the hardest-hit constituents. Its shares have fallen by nearly 30% over the period of the selloff, making it one of the largest single-stock decliners in the SOX. The scale of Coherent’s loss highlights how quickly sentiment has reversed for some previously favored semiconductor names.

CoreWeave credit stress intensifies

At the same time, CoreWeave has emerged as a focal point of concern in credit markets. Yields on one of the company’s 2031 bonds briefly approached about 16% intraday before easing somewhat later in the session, signaling investors are demanding a high premium to hold its debt. Five-year credit-default swaps on CoreWeave have widened above 1,000 basis points, reaching record intraday levels for the cost of insuring against default.

Market pricing in the swaps market now implies more than a 60% probability that CoreWeave could default within five years. The company’s shares have plunged sharply over the week, adding equity-market pressure to the mounting credit concerns. The concurrent stress in both debt and equity underscores how rapidly risk perceptions around CoreWeave have deteriorated during the broader semiconductor downturn.

Spillover into broader U.S. equity benchmarks

The semiconductor slump has not been contained to the sector alone. The S&P 500 finished lower on October 16, 2026, with weakness in chip stocks cited as a key factor behind the index’s decline. The pressure on such a large and influential industry group has fed into broader risk-off sentiment across the market.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 index has also been significantly affected. It has posted its worst week in the recent referenced period, with the semiconductor rout identified as a principal driver of the losses. This linkage highlights the importance of chipmakers and related hardware firms within major U.S. benchmarks and how sector-specific stress can rapidly translate into wider market volatility.

Sector performance despite isolated strength

The pullback in semiconductors has occurred even as some chipmakers have delivered strong quarterly results. Recent earnings strength has not been sufficient to offset the broader downdraft in valuations across the group. As selling pressure has persisted, investors have continued to reduce exposure to the sector, with both higher-quality and more speculative names moving lower in tandem.

Key Takeaways

  • 01Semiconductor stocks are experiencing a broad and deep pullback that is affecting most major names in the SOX index.
  • 02Stress around CoreWeave’s debt and equity has become a central pressure point, with markets pricing in elevated default risk.
  • 03Weakness in the chip sector is exerting a meaningful drag on the S&P 500 (SPX) and Nasdaq 100 (NDX), reinforcing the sector’s importance to U.S. equities.
